Description

A work of patience and artistry, this white Jamawar shawl is handwoven and covered in delicate Sozni embroidery. A rich tapestry of flowers and vines, created in jewel tones and gentle pastels, covers every inch of the plush base. The intricate detailing of Sozni needlework resembles brushstrokes on silk, done meticulously by master artisans who dedicate years to a single piece. Historically, Jamawar shawls were woven for royalty, taking pride as wedding heirlooms and luxury gifts. The all-over embroidery elevates this piece into a collector’s treasure, ideal for weddings, bridal trousseau, and heirloom gifting.

About the Craft

Sozni embroidery is a fine needle work, originating in Kashmir, characterized by delicate, detailed patterns of floral, abstract, or geometric motifs. It is manually done on authentic Pashmina shawls by skilled artisans using thin needles and fine threads. The process is meticulous; embroidering an inch-thick border of a pure Pashmina shawl can take up to four months. Designs are first stamped onto the shawl and then carefully embroidered with chosen colour combinations.

The art of Pashmina making involves a series of meticulous steps. It starts in Ladakh where the down fibre of the Changthangi goat is collected, cleaned, and sorted. Women hand-spin the fibre, a painstaking labour of love. To spin fibre for one Pashmina shawl, a single artisan takes at least 2 months, spinning a handful per day for 8-10 hours. Spinning is followed by weaving, where men mount the delicate spun fibre onto wooden handlooms to create soft, lightweight Pashmina shawls. These are later enhanced with dyeing, embroidery, or prints. Luxury Pashmina shawl making and Sozni embroidery are two different meticulous art forms of Kashmir that together create heirloom shawls cherished worldwide.

Pashmina Care

Always dry clean your pure Pashmina for the safest care. For hand washing, use cold water and Pashmina/Cashmere shampoo. Do not wring or twist. Gently squeeze water out. Dry by placing between two clean towels and rolling them together. Air dry, do not hang. Avoid direct sunlight for drying.

Store your Pashmina in a clean, dry place. To protect from moths, fold neatly, wrap in muslin, and store with neem or cedar. With proper care, Pashmina will last for generations.

Before you receive your Pashmina, Please Note:

Authentic Pashmina is woven and embroidered manually by artisans. Irregularities in weave or embroidery reflect meticulous handwork and are not flaws but marks of authenticity. Slight variations in colour may appear due to screen differences. The actual shade may differ slightly.
