About the Craft
The making of Pashmina is a centuries-old art that begins in Ladakh, where the fine down fibre of the Changthangi goat is gathered, cleaned, and sorted. Women artisans in Kashmir then handspin this fibre into delicate yarn using traditional wooden yinders—a process requiring immense skill and patience. It can take nearly a month to spin enough fibre for one muffler, with each artisan working up to 10 hours a day.
Once spun, the yarn is handwoven on wooden looms by master craftsmen to create fabric that is incredibly soft yet remarkably warm. The piece is then handed over to specialists for dyeing, embroidery, or finishing touches. Each step, from spinning to weaving, celebrates sustainable fashion and the enduring legacy of Kashmiri artistry.
Pashmina Care
Always dry clean your pure Pashmina for the safest care. If hand washing, use cold water and mild Pashmina or Cashmere shampoo. Do not wring or twist; gently press to remove excess water. Lay flat between two towels, roll to absorb moisture, and air dry away from sunlight.
Store your Pashmina in a clean, dry place wrapped in a muslin cloth with neem or cedar wood. When cared for properly, it will retain its softness and beauty for generations.
Before You Receive Your Pashmina
Each Pashmsutra muffler is handcrafted by skilled artisans, ensuring every piece is unique. Slight irregularities in weave or colour are not flaws but marks of authenticity and human craftsmanship.
Minor colour variations may occur due to screen settings. While every effort is made to represent the shade accurately, the actual tone may appear slightly different in person.
G.I. Certified Handspun Pashmina: Why It Is More Expensive than Regular Pure Pashmina
Pashmina has for long been cherished and celebrated as the pinnacle of luxury. It is a fabric, so fine, warm and timeless that even the highest of royalty adorned it for centuries. But among all the forms nature blesses our wardrobes with, Handspun Pashmina stands apart as the purest, most authentic. Before modern machinery took over, the threads were spun exclusively with bare hands, slowly, delicately, with a deep emotional connection between the artisans and the fibre. Today, just a small percentage of artisans follow this ancient method, making handspun pieces incredibly rare and precious. Yet there are a few dealers of handspun shawls, like Pashmsutra, which sells 100% pure, hand spun shawls online......
